Lake Beaumaris assessment and rehabilitation

A group of concerned Castledowns and area community residents met on site with Councillor Dave Loken in September 2014 to express concerns regarding the deteriorating infrastructure of Beaumaris Lake and adjoining City of Edmonton Water Park.  On March 27, 2015 the group received an update on the situation regarding Beaumaris Lake.  They have been informed of the following from Councillor Loken’s Office:

In response to the on-going issues regarding the conditions of Beaumaris Lake the City of Edmonton has initiated a task force to respond to the concerns.

Under this initiative Beaumaris Lake will be the first facility to have an overall condition assessment completed. This initiative will be used as a pilot model to address other issues regarding lakes in the city in the future.

The task team is divided into two working groups. Each working group is a collaboration between the drainage, transportation, and parks departments in the city. The initiative is headed by the drainage department.

The first working group will focus on short-term and immediate concerns regarding Beaumaris Lake. This working group will be responding to regular maintenance needs of Beaumaris, as well as responding to any concerns that arise in the interim. As an example, this group will address concerns regarding the stairways and the brick pavers.

The second working group will focus on the medium and long term needs of Beaumaris.  This working group will conduct the overall condition assessment of the lake, and will develop a pro-active approach to rehabilitation of the assets. This group will look at permanent solutions to infrastructure that experiences ongoing repairs, and using the results of the overall condition assessment, will develop a prioritized list of rehabilitation needs. This group will facilitate capital planning and ensure that the recommended projects have an approved budget in place to be able to implement these projects.

The “Friends of Beaumaris” have worked hard to bring this issue to a plan of action so that we can all have a beautiful lake and that the infrastructure is returned to its original pristine state.  Thank you to all of the citizens working on this project and to Ed Rasko for sharing this information.

Play Ball! Community Softball steps up to the plate

Most of our players have been amalgamated with nearby communities but thanks to the great interest and registrations we will be hosting our very own U6 T-ball team this year. We look forward to this trend and hope to have even more teams next year!  Softball will get going soon and we wish all of our players and teams well!  We would like to thank Crystal Wimpney for stepping forward to be our Softball Director to help get things taken care of this season. If you have any softball questions please contact softballlbcl@gmail.com

Community Soccer set to take to the pitch.

We will be hosting 10 soccer teams this spring (three teams at U4, one team at U6, two U8 Boys teams, one U8 Girls team, one U10 Boys, one U12 Boys, and one U18 Girls.  It has been very difficult to find coaches this year; we rely solely on volunteers to coach, usually parents from the team.  Unfortunately, we were unable to accommodate all of our registered players due to a lack of coaches; sadly we lost two U6 teams by sending the players elsewhere or refunding money and the players will not play this year. Luckily most teams have parent volunteers coaching and fortunately we have some teams being coached by Grant MacEwan University students who came to the call for volunteers when our soccer director asked.  We truly appreciate everyone who stepped forward to coach and assistant coach this year!

Soccer is scheduled to start the first week of May.  You should hear from your coach by the last week of April.  If you have any soccer inquires please contact our Soccer Director, Jennifer, by email at soccerlbcl@gmail.com

For more info, check out our Soccer Page.

A few soccer reminders…

-  U16 & U18 Community players (as well as U12, U14, U16 &U18 coaches, assistant coaches and managers) must have player cards.  Player Carding sessions will be held in the EMSA office located in the SOUTH Edmonton Soccer Centre at 6520 Roper Road.  All carding sessions are from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm and here are the remaining dates:  Tues., April 28th Thurs., April 30th, and Tues., May 5th (please bring valid ID with you).

Spring Fling Smartie Pants Dance was a rocking success!

The Board would like to thank our Social Directors Sonya and Maria for putting together a fun-filled night of music, dancing, sparkle tattoos, snacks, and children hanging out with friends!  We had approximately 110 children attend the event!  We would like to extend a huge thanks to Grant and Yvonne, owners of Papa Murphy’s Take and Bake Pizza Oxford Location (152 Ave & 127 St) for providing our attendees with FREE pizza!  We would also like to thank all other volunteers and helpers for making this event a success.
